This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is said to be connected to Markendeya only son of Mrikandu Rishi and Marudmati .
When the devout couple pray for a child they are given option of a divine intelligent child but who will have a short life or an idiot of a child who will live till old age .
They select the gifted child and so Markendeya a very intelligent boy and a great Siva devotee is born .
At 16 years of age Death is waiting to capture soul of markendeya and yama the God of death personally comes to take him away .
Markendeya runs into the temple hugs the shiv linga Yama tries to throw the rope with which he has to catch Markendeya
But it lands on Shiv linga itself and an infuriated Shiva destroys the God of death .
The annual festivities of temple contains elephant processions and carrying horses models called Nedumkuthira
