DALLAS in Texas

We went to Dallas in Texas state in October 2021 from Houston just for a day ,we went to see the Dallas state fair which has been an annual fair from 1886 ,
Reaching in evening we checked into our spacious hotel and then left for the fair ,returned late night and next day we drove back to Houston ,so did not see the city much
Dallas is one of the three biggest cities in Texas ,others being Houston and san Antonio the capital is Austin which today is becoming very popular as a second Silicon valley .
Dallas like most of Texas was part of Spain later Mexico and then taken over as United states territory .
Today its a major city in the US a junction of many interstate highways and railways and a great trading center with universities Hospitals and Business center ,it has several parks museum and a vibrant down town .It has one of the most busiest airports in the world .
In 1963 John F Kennedy was assassinated here .
The state Texas fair was in one corner of the big city ,after checking in to our lovely hotel we reached the fair after a good drive it was pretty cold too ,the fair was full of eating joints ,we had a turkey steamed leg which was delicious and I had some craft beer with it ,later we walked through the many stalls and reached the huge open air stadium where by dusk there was an Elvis Presley look alike band doing a concert ,it was very entertaining indeed and i could shake some leg too ,after eating chocolate covered apples we returned to out hotel and next day left after a fitful breakfast

Har Gobind Khurana

Har Govind Khurana 1922 to 2022

its hundred years this year since Har Gobind Khurana a Nobel prize winner of Medicine and an Indian American scientist was born and its our duty to remember this great man of science

Indian peninsula had produced several scientists amongst others over the years though their recognition may have come from foreign shores, one of the notables amongst them has been Har Gobind Khurana.

He was born in 1922 in Raipur part of British India which would become part of Pakistan after Independence, He is known now as an Indian American who got American citizenship in 1966.he is a Punjabi Hindu, youngest of five children, his father educating them all though just a clerk in British India.

Har Gobind had his early classes under a tree later in school, got scholarship for under and postgraduation In Lahore university in Chemistry by 1945.

He then got a fellowship scholarship to get his PhD from Cambridge, for study on chemistry of Melanin’s with Roger beer later post-doctoral study in Switzerland where he also worked, later he moved to Canada and from there to US, university of Wisconsin, Madison where he was a Biochemistry professor and had started research on nucleotides and RNA codes for protein synthesis.

He married a Swiss national Esther and had three children

Before going to Canada, he had tried to settle down in Punjab but he did not find suitable placement and support for research

He shared the Nobel prize in physiology in Medicine in 1968 with Robert Holley and Marshal Nirenberg synthesizing oligonucleotides as building blocks of amino acids, precursor of polymerase chain reaction and discovering set of three nucleotides called codons as basic building blocks

Though it was known our cells made genes which made proteins the process was unknown

In short, he discovered the essential function of our gene and for construction the first synthetic gene, he deciphered our DNA and wrote the dictionary for our genetic language in fact he not only made a synthetic DNA but put it in a live bacterium an early start to promising biotechnology

He built RNA chains later used to produce protein molecules

He would often say if you want to travel far you need to travel alone

He was helpful to his compatriots inspiring to his students and polite to society.

He loved long hikes, music and swimming

He knew of the announcement of his Nobel prize the last as he had gone for one of his lonely walks along lake Madison where he camped in a tent with no telephone or radio but pen and paper to write on his work and his wife had to reach him by driving to him after hearing the news

He was given the Padma Vibhusan in 1969 by the Indian Government

Strangely the Pakistan Government never claimed him or gave him any honors ignoring him as a Hindu Indian

Joined MIT in 1970 and was there till he retired in 2007

In 2007 University of Wisconsin, Government of India under Department of Technology and Indo US science and technology forum would form the Korona program to create scientists, industrialists and social entrepreneurs in USA and India.

He would get foreign member of Royal society in 1978

He would work on Rhodopsin the protein in our retinas post Nobel prize

He passed away in 2011 at 89 years

Abirameswar Temple

Abirameswar temple is a very ancient temple in Tamil nadu more than 2000 years old .

Its near  Villupuram on highway between Chennai and Trichirapalli .in a place called Thiruvamaathur

Its a Siva temple and has a self formed Siva lingam ,siva worshipped as Abirameswar and his consort Paravathi as Manonmani amma ,its described in 7 th century Tamil saiva canonical work called Thevaram ,classified as paadal petra shethram and sung by Naayanmaars .

Its about 2 acres in size and opposite is a shrine to his consort called Muthamman shrine ,the idol was supposed to have been installed by Adhi sankara himself

theres a legend of how ancient cows had no horns and had pleaded to Lord Siva for a defense mechanism as they were being harassed by other animals and Siva gave them horns and hence the name Thiruvaamathur ,aa is cow .

Thiruaanikoil Trichy

Another of the Panchabootham sthelams where the Siva linga is representing element water is Thiruanaikoil a very ancient temple situated 12 km from Thiruchirapalli in Srirangam island in between Kaveri river and its northern branch Kollidam river .
Its a Padal petra sthalam one of the 275 Saivite temples or a temple included in hymns of ancient Tamil treasties of the 63 Saiva Nayanmars who lived in 6th to 9th century AD and sung on Lord Siva .
The temple deity is Jambukeswar as one fond of jambul fruit given as daily first prasad and his spouse Sree Akilandeswari .
Godess Parvathi is supposed to have been sent to earth by Siva as once she mocked Lord Siva penance to betterment of the world
So she came to a Jambu forest and created a linga of water and hence called Appusthalam .
Siva gave her enlightment or Siva gnana and she was enshrined as Akilandeswari .
A underground stream flows under the linga perpetually wetting it .
A story also talks of an elephant and a spider praying with utmost devotion .
The spider protects the lingam from sunlight by weaving a web .
The elephant removes this.
The angry spider gets into the elephants trunk and kills it .
The elephant is given moksha
Actually both spider and elephant are Sivas gunas in Kailas and they compete each other on who is more devoted hence born as spider and elephant .
Strangely the entrance to inner sanctum is very short and narrow to prevent an elephant from entering .
The spider gets rebirth for its sin of murder and is born as a Chola king called Kochengot Chola who builds the huge temple and 78 other temples .
Godess Akilandeswari is a ferocious form .
Adi sankara when he vists this temple adorns her ears with ornaments called Thadangam and also a Vinayakar idol opposite Akilandeswari .
Akilandeswari is opposite the main deity as Parvati was Sivas student
We were astounded at size of the temple it was huge
We needed to drive more than 1.5 km to reach front entrance from back .
It was all made of granite .
The huge pillars the massive walls tge granite floors the sculptures stunned as at the level of workmanship in those days of primitive equipment's .
The architecture of temple even supersedes Srirangam temple built at same time in same island .
There is a one km huge wall 25 feet height 2 feet thickness where lord Siva himself as a siddhar or holy man instructed the workmen.
This is called Vibhuti prakara .
There are huge mandapams one with 799 pillars .
Here priest dresses like a female for afternoon puja of lord Siva representing Parvathis puja to him .
We had free puliyodhara as prasadam and bought chakkara pongal and vada .
It was one of the tastiest ever and i could tell this to the very person who cooked it .
Thiruanaikoil was a memorable temple indeed .
