Mundu tales

In Mallu land a mundu or dhoti is tradition .

In fact its unisex .

Most men and women simply wound around their waist a white piece of cloth albeit a long one one that draped down to the toes from days back in kerala .

The difference was the men had a habit of folding it into half for convinience or ventilation or body language .

Can one ever forget a Mohanlals unfolding his mundu in Spadikam using it as his famous weapon against his enemies ?

But with women turning to saree and chudidhar the mundu has become the preorgative of the mallu man expect on occasions or temple visits or weddings when the mundu is worn by women too ..

Now the art of wearing a double mundu needs to come out of sheer practice and some dedication .

Innocent the actor in a malayalam film enacts how a sozzled man does it by lying on one and rolling oneself .

Mundus definitely cannot defy gravity and using a belt to hold it ,for me is juvenile .

Remember it has no button or zip or pocket which is a big disadvantage in carrying a wallet mobile etc which a pant would hold with non chalance .

Somehow a Shahrukh khan or anyone north of Vindhyas look comic in a mundu and cant carry it off just like we southies cannot a pyjama kurta with same elan .

Most Malabar temples and Padmanabhaswamy temple insist on mundus and many tourists from other states walk around with rented pieces of clothes uncomfortably draped .

I still feel there is nothing to beat a golden kasavu properly tied with an elegant half sleeved silk shirt and a shining chain shown on a hairy chest with a sardonic smile from a moustachiod mallu which shows him in his best.

It all depends on how good he can hold it 😁
