SPB Snippets
He used to give the hundreds of shawls he used to get in programmes to poor people in the place in roads near temples or Rly sn platforms for years after his programmes .
Almost all who know him closely or even remotely say he never ever hurts anyone or gets angry he makes even junior artistes feel relaxed by talking to them joking and making them do thier best .
If he needs to advice another singer or musician on a mistake he will always do it privately but when he wants to compliment anyone he will do it publicly .
He never used to test mike using hello etc but would say OM .
He was not for any introductory speech on him specially when sentence one and only SPB was used he would say how can one SPB sing I need mike , audio organiser, musicians ,director, composer, lyricians and above all you audience !
He helped many musicians in distress during covid times quietly by singing songs online and using SPB Charities .
His last speech told us Covid was a bad lesson for humanity for having destroyed nature and we needed to change our habits .
He would say if a day comes hes accused of a crime or bad thing or a scandal he would commit suicide .
He would openly tell he never maintained the strict rigors of musicians as he used to smoke take ice creams talk loudly and had occasional drinks but advised no musician to follow him in these habits .
Like Dasettan he used to worship Md Rafi saab and eulogise his singing .
He would never be tired of telling Rafi saab was God to him .
He always called Dasettan his elder brother and even did pada puja as to a Guru two years back .
His relationship with Ilayaraja was long before ilayaraja became a music director .
Recently when to everyones surprise ilayaraja sent a legal notice to SPB not to sing his songs in concert without paying royalty !!
for which SPB just said dont worry i will talk to him,i know him well and will handle him .
One could see that bond in Ilayarajas emotional tribute in the loss of his long time friend today .
Kamalahassan considered SPB as one of his elder brothers calling him Annayya .
SPB had been voice of Kamal in songs and dubbing for decades .
A famous singer like SPB doesnt need to practice much before every concert as he had sung the popular songs for countless times but SPB would listen to recording of originals from the morning countless times and till last minute .
Usually big singers make improvisations based on thier creativity and experience but SPB was particular not to do it during recording as he felt that was the total preorgative of the music director and he has to follow his music in every single nuance , but in live singing for concerts he would entertain the crowd with tasteful improvisations , but never in the beggining of song ,he would faithfully sing the pallavi and saranam as it was and only by second half would add his creative bits .
He would advice junior singers to do the same .
He was very fair in the applause he used to get he would say it belongs to music director ,film director ,actors, cameraman techinicians, musicians, and finally the crowd itself for nurturing all of them .
He was very concerned of others big or small .
Once when singer Yesudas had gone with SPB for a concert somewhere in Canada or US
Usually in such shows after show is over organisers are more concerned in closing things no one remembered Dasettan did not have any food .
Back to hotel he returned and slept eating an apple but later in night somebody tapped door telling room service and when he opened door it was SPB bringing him food !
Once in an open air concert in Hosur it was raining and all were worried but SPB started his programme telling rain will come only when they return home
The rain stopped in that area and came back only after programme as he predicted .
Such a great person with great blessing and talent was SPB .
