Amongst art and creative talents I feel Singers are blessed more to be closest to people and God .
Of course we love our Actors ,Dancers, Artists, Mimics,but they dont get melded into our life so much as singers do .
When we fall in love we may think of how Kamalahassan or Mohanlal acted in love but we may relate more to the songs they sung
When we lose someone or go through sadness certain songs relate to us .
When we hear songs of our childhood or teens or different ages it instantly transports us to nostalgia .
For listening to a song we need no radio or mp3 player or mobile it could just be a song in the air or from a neigbhours house or shop that would transport us by instant nostalgia .
It could be no song physically but just thinking of a song is all that is needed .
The song lingers long after the singer or its maker .
A kishore or Rafi song can still give us joy
And thier presence is etheral in every moment of our lives .
SPB songs were part of my life from the snippets floating out of radios later transistors casettes CD and mp3 players finally mobiles as I was born and lived in Madras where he too practiced his art .
I remember hearing of a new singer in the horizon when the reigning king of tamil music TM .Soundarrajan could not sing for an MGR film since he had to prepare for his daughters wedding.
MGR was a man who was not to be refused when he requested something whatever be the reason , so he asked around and heard of an young Engineering college student in Madras and made him sing
Aayiram Nilaave vaa in his film
its still as fresh as a rose .
At 74 SPB retained the same inflections of his youth and the subtle tonal variations he could give to his songs .
There was so much soul to his singing like in many talented singers
it caught you straight in your heart .
After this there was never a look back and he completed his 40000 songs in 16 languages for the best actors in Indian cinema for 5 decades .
He could sing for MGR or Sivaji
Kamal or Rajni or
Surya or Vijay or Salman khan just like they themselves would sing .
His singing for every actor was different probably thier charachters personalities thier actions thier mannerisms were deeply ingrained when he sang for them like when he sang for Rajni he was Rajni himself .
For Kamalahassan he was his voice clone and even dubbed 164 films in Telugu for him .
Sangita Menon Malhan he is not trained in classical music too .
In Hindi he was hesitant to sing initially in Ek Duje Ke Liye but Director Balachander insisted he knew Kamalahassans romantic role in the film will get full only with SPB s voice and Laxmikanth Pyarelal agreed
Rest is history
For Salman khan too he was his voice for a decade and more .
Above all this mans humility and humanity stood out and his piety and love beyond religion , caste , economy , or country ,every single human being .
Many singers have this universality . including our Dasettan .
Divine benevolence gives them that , they are reflectors of the ultimate which has no differences
only we do .
They are special people closest to the ultimate power and are born to give us a glimpse of love at its purest ,and make us happy with thier talents .
SPB s work is finished after 74 years though he went through much physical discomfort in the end .
Now his songs will continue to inspire us from our mundane lives as he probably watches us from.the Gandharva loga the world of singers .
More than his songs it is this great mans message that is needed for our transformation .
