Suseendram and Nagaraja temples in Nagercoil in 2019
It had been my wish to visit Suseendram temple in Kanyakumari district in between Nagercoil and Kanyakumari for a long time .
I had heard from my mother that my fathers father one of the Ayurvedic court physician of Travancore royal family Parameswaran Moosu had in his later years visited this temple to pray as he wanted more peace .
He had died when my dad was just 10 years old .
Suseendram then was managed by a kerala namboodhiri family Thazemadhom and was a much visited temple by kerala namboothiris .
After Independence Kanyakumari district went to Tamilnadu .
The temple was called Sthanu malayam temple
Stanhu was lord Shiva
Mal was Vishnu
And Alayam Brahma .
This unique temple had all thrimurtis in one idol .
There was also an 18 foot Anjaneya .
This was buried under earth fearing Tipu Sultan who destroyed and looted Hindu temples.Tipu could never come to Thiruvananthapuram and statue was forgotten .
It was found 30 years back and reinstalled .
The 40 meter white Gopuram of the temple was seen from the region it was full of sculptures .The temple itself in its present form was built in the 17 th century .
We had gone to Nagercoil for a wedding .
After that we took an auto to Suchindram and Nagaraja temples .
The Stanhumalayam temple as legend goes has many stories
In one lord Indra lusts for Gautam maharshi wife and stealthily impresses upon the maharshi its morning by making cock crow when Gautam maharshi goes for his bath Indra changes his image to tgat of the Maharshi by magic and cheats his wife for a physical relationship .
The Maharshi realises this later
He curses Indra to be covered by the organ he lusted for and Indra is covered by yonis .
Indra is repentant of his act and is told to pray in Suseendram temple for solace .
Its said Indra still does that .
One is not allowed to wear shirts inside the temple .
It has huge granite courtyards with a huge nandhi
740 pillars in the nadana mandabam and one big musical pillar made of a single stone .
Cameras and mobile photography is not allowed inside temple .
Nagaraja temple in Nagercoil is for naga king Vasuki
Namboothiris from pambum mekkatu in Kerala are referred to this temple as priests .
The story goes that when a village girl cutting weeds with a sickle accidentally cut a five headed serpent and blood spurted .
It was here that temple was built .
The temple precints was laid with neat red tiles with huge nanyan trees a huge pond with naga idols .
Its said that this was a jain temple earlier .
We returned back to our hotel very near Nagaraja temple .
