At last we went to Zains in Calicut today for lunch .
Having heard a lot of this place very near Calicut beach it was started and managed by one woman Sainabi Noor who years back started it as a small tea shop to pass time as her husband was working in Dubai .
Her shop would open only in tea time with many local snacks and tea .
Slowly as crowds grew she started lunch and dinner mainly 4 types of Biriyani .
Mutton ,chicken,Fish,Prawns, and Ghee rice with Chicken masala, mutton masala ,Beef fry Prawns .
The snacks and breakfast items like pathiri, mutta mala, unnakaya ,pazham nirachadu continued
She also made excellent date pickles to go with the dum biriyani and desserts like Badam geer ,strawberry ,pineapple,coconut choclate, soufles .
We ordered Chicken Biriyani ,Ghee rice,Mutton masala ,Chicken masala .
And strawberry and tender coconut souffles and an ice cold Badam Geer .
Everything was just right
Not very spicy but tangy and tasty .
Date pickle was a delight
One could buy it too seperately as a take away .everything was warm fresh full of flavour served in a very homely way .
The prices too were unbelievably economic .
Though the main chef and founder they said comes only in evening ,her daughter told us her mother still directs the cooks and knows exactly how much and what to add where in food prepared .
I remembered Ustad Hotel the film which is almost a take off on Zains, the difference being in the film its a male chef and owner enacted by veteran late actor Thilakan who tells his nephew a budding chef that whatever one cooks it needs to have as its main ingredient Mohabbat or love .
About Zains one can say, Yes ,
it has tons of mohabbat in its dishes .
